Royce Gracie Seminar 23.05.10

What an amazing day we had today training with the great Royce Gracie.

Sam, Liam Spowage & Neil Marshall had the amazing opportunity to train with Mr Gracie in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

There were around 50 people in attendance, some like us had little or no experience and others were very skilled; Mr Gracie spent time with every student regardless of their experience.

There were many familiar faces at the seminar including Rick Burns and Gary Samsone from Burns School of Black Belts as well as new faces and new people to train with including Eddie Kone from EK BJJ.

An amazing day and worth every moment training in that scorching heat, many thanks to Andy Crittenden from ACMAC for organising and hosting the event.

Sparring Seminar

Sam Wood, Liam Spowage & Neil Marshall went along to the sparring seminar at Andy Crittenden's Martial Arts Centre in Doncaster on Sunday 21st February.

There was a brilliant turn out considering it had snowed quite heavily overnight.  The first session was semi-contact taught by Andy Crittenden & Ric Burns and the second session was light continuous which was taught be Kev Miller.

Plenty of things to learn and practice with some light sparring at the end of the session, a pleasure to meet up with friends from other schools, overall a great day and well worth attending.

Fantastic Support for the Opening of Bulwell Class

Thank you to the following students for attending the opening day at Bulwell on Saturday 20th Feb:

Keisha Dunkley-Ross, Mario Del-Gaudio, Thomas Mabbott, Jordan Hall, Charlene Swinscoe, Steve Chambers, Rob Dunkley-Ross, Ric Hill, Neil Marshall, Roxy Palmer-Davies, Trev Palmer-Davies, Daniel Palmer-Davies & Liam Spowage, we also had 3 new students turn up for a trial class - 16 on an opening day is fantastic!

Well done to Trev on his first day as Team Leader for the Little Tigers, I had anticipated him having an easy start just watching but an unexpected but delightful turn out of 7 to the Little Tiger class meant he had to just jump in and help straight away!

Thanks again everyone xxxxx

MAIUK

On Saturday 13th February a group went along to CMAA in Manchester to attend the Martial Arts Instructor UK Course with Andy Morrell.

Sam & Liam went along to support the team and to keep up with the changes that will soon be coming into effect.

Matt Bowen will now be moving onto his practical assistant instructor training.  Ric Hill, Rob Dunkley-Ross & Neil Marshall will continue to assist Sam & Liam as team leaders until they reach the appropriate time served requirement for assistant instructor training.

The MAIUK programme provides the foundation for sucessful instructors including the essential areas such as child protection, health & safety and communication skills.

Thanks to Liam for his imput of weird and wonderful subjects for the guys to talk about in the communication skills section, well done to Matt and his invention of the discombobulator............most amusing!

Everyone worked extremely hard and were a credit to White Tiger, the hard work now begins with the practical training.

New Bulwell Class

The new class at Bulwell is opening on Saturday 20th February 2010.

The Little Tiger class is 10.00am - 11.00am and the junior & adult class is 11.30am - 12.30pm.

The venue is The Red Lion Community Centre, 261 Coventry Road, Bulwell, Nottingham, NG6 8LT

Tournament Boston Sunday 31st January 2010

A brilliant day for the squad today.

Neil Marshall got 2nd in points, Matt Bowen got 3rd in points and 3rd in continous and Rob Dunkley-Ross got 3rd in points and 2nd in veterans points.

5 trophies for 3 fighters was a fantastic result, well done to all of you.

Many thanks to Liam Spowage and Lance Wilkinson for coming along to support the team.

Grading

Well done to everyone who graded today, Liam and I were really impressed by the preparation and effort everyone put in.

Every student worked hard but an extra well done goes to the Little Tigers, even the very youngest students were exceptionally well behaved and the concentration and hard work from them was fabulous.

The students that particularly stood out for us this time were Little Tigers Stephen (Junior) Chambers and Dylan Lane, Elliott Bradshaw from the junior group and Shaun Prince from the adult group, well done, keep up the good work!

Results will be ready for collection in classes this week.

The next grading date has been set for 2nd May 2010.

New Classes Opening in February 2010

There will be a new Little Tiger class (age 5-10) from Wednesday 3rd February 2010.

The venue is Jesse Boot Wildcats Arena and will start at 5pm.  To allow for this, the junior class will start at 6.15pm and the adult class will start at 7.30pm.

There will also be a new class on Saturdays, the venue for this is The Red Lion Community Centre in Bulwell.  The schedule will be Little Tigers (age 5-10) at 10.00 - 11.00am and then juniors and adults together (age 11+) at 11.30am - 12.30pm.

Monthly Sparring Class

First of the monthly sparring classes today, many thanks to the following for coming along:  Bradley Brailsford, Connor Kilner, Nathan & Mackenzie Rooney, Shaun Prince, Matt Bowen, Kristie Beck, Neil Marshall and Steve Wilson.

The first hour was semi-contact sparring and the second hour was light continuous.  Some of the students are very new to sparring and it was pleasing to see them get stuck in and really hold their own against some of the more experienced and higher grade students.  Well done to everyone.

Many of you spar during your classes but this is an opportunity for extra practice, especially those who want to take part in the White Tiger Match Fight later in the year.

Keep an eye out on the events page for next months sparring class date.

Donation To Mapperley Church

I have received a phone call today from the treasurer at Mapperley Methodist Church who sends his sincere thanks to everyone who donated money towards their refurbishment scheme.

During the run up to Christmas we raised £199.26 from students who put their spare change into a jar and at the Christmas party we had a guess the toy names competition.

There is a possibility that the money may be put towards a spruce up on the hall floor which will benefit us as much as it will benefit them.

The church have asked if there are any of our students who would donate some of their time to helping do the job, I would think that they would hire a sanding machine and get the sealant out of the money but I dont think it will be enough to pay a contractor.

If anyone can offer to help with this, I will sort out some free lessons/gradings etc to make it worth your time.

Many thanks again to everyone
Sam

Snow!

Thank you to everyone who managed to get to classes on Monday and Thursday this week despite the horrible weather.

Apologies to those who usually attend on Tuesdays or Wednesdays where the venues were closed therefore the classes unfortunately had to be cancelled.

Fingers crossed the snow will be gone by next week and we can get back to normal.

Merry Christmas

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, I hope Santa has been good to you!

Thank you to all the students, their parents and partners for all the support in 2009, the classes have gone from strength to strength this year and thanks to you White Tiger Kickboxing Academy is building a fantastic group of members.

We have some more offers coming in 2010 which will be beneficial to both existing and new members and some events being planned which will hopefully involve many of the students.

A big thank you to the Team Leaders who give up their time to help out with the Little Tigers classes; Charlene, Jade, Rob, Ric and Matt and a special thank you to Instructor Liam Spowage for all his input and ideas.

Have a fab Christmas everyone, eat, drink and be merry and I'll see you back to work off those calories from Monday 4th January 2010.

Best Wishes

Sam xxxxxx

Christmas Party

A massive thank you to everyone who came along to the White Tiger Kickboxing Christmas Party at the Queen Adelaide Pub in Sneinton on Saturday 12th December 2009.

We had a really great turn out with many in fancy dress.  Congratulations to Courtney Friend and Lilly Chambers in the children's fancy dress competition for their fame and princess outfits and to Rob Dunkley-Ross for his genie and Michelle Dowse, Helen Kirk and Alan Williams for their combination effort as the bad wolf and little piggies for the adult fancy dress.

Congratulations to everyone who won awards, prizes and medals.  Raffle prizes included vouchers for equipment, jackets, hoodies, lessons and gradings.  Many thanks to Alita at the Queen Adelaide for the two bottles of red wine donated for raffle prizes.

Very well done to the students who received awards and medals for your efforts throughout the year (see christmas party web page for full details).

A big thank you to everyone who supported the raffle, the toy name guess and the money jar guess (the money from the toy guess and the money jar guess is being donated to the Mapperley Methodist Church refurbishment fund).

A special thank you to Liam Spowage for his assistance this year in the smooth running of the academy and his help in the organising the party.  Thank you to Charlene Swinscoe, Matt Bowen, Ric Hill and Rob-Dunkley-Ross for their help with the Little Tiger classes this year.  For some of these guys, this is the first step towards their instructor programmes, so keep up the hard work guys!

Thanks to Alita, Clare and the staff at the Queen Adelaide who worked hard all night and thanks to Leighton the DJ for the good music choices for the evening and for choosing the fancy dress winners.

Thanks to every student, their families and friends for supporting the party, I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did (Liam and I have already decided on our costumes for next year).

Self Defence Federation Seminar 29.11.09

Sam & Liam attended the Self Defence Federation winter seminar along with students Matt Bowen and Neil Marshall.

The course was held by the Self Defence Federation Principal Dave Turton 8th Dan on Sunday 29th November 2009 at Andy Crittenden's Martial Arts Centre in Doncaster.

The morning session was an introduction to knife defence and the afternoon session was locks, levers, chokes, takedowns etc.

This was the first time Matt and Neil have trained with Dave before and they had a good sample of his extensive knowledge and for Sam & Liam who even after training with Dave many times; still learnt many new techniques.

A brilliant day even with all of us waking up to a few aches and bruises!

Peterborough Series 2009

Well done to the team who took part in the last of the Peterborough Series for 2009.  The team this time were: Rob Dunkley-Ross, Matt Bowen, Steve Wilson, Matt Drew & Trevor Palmer-Davies.

Rob came away with another 2nd to add to his collection for this year for veterans points.

Well done to Trev's for his first tournament, attending those sparring classes regularly certainly paid off - I think he even surprised himself as to how well he did.

Massive improvement form Matt Bowen, won his first fight by miles but then lost out in the fight off by one point which is they best he's done so far.

Nice work everyone.

Gradings 25.10.09

Well done to everyone who graded today for their coloured belts.

A huge well done to our youngest group the Little Tigers (age 5-10) for their concentration, efforts and excellent behaviour for the whole grading.  They all did well but on the day the ones that particularly stood out were Nathan, Oren & Courtney, an extra well done to you three.  All Little Tigers who graded higher than red showed a big improvement on their last grade scores and two students scored themselves a merit; congratulations to Oren & Eden.

There were only a few juniors grading this time and again improvement was shown from their last grades, well done Abigail; you have improved a lot in recent months and it showed in your grading.

Many of the adults are now established members and are therefore moving up the ranks to higher grades.  I was pleased with everyone's efforts; the ones who particularly stood out for their techniques were Steve Chambers and Kelly Hill.  There were also three students who graded for their first belt; Lynette, Trev & Jo; I was really impressed with all three of you, nice work!

Principles of Power Seminar

Brilliant seminar today with Jason Dorn on Principles of Power.

Myself and Matt Bowen attended the course and I can absolutely say that Matt listened to everything that was being taught ............. I think my shoulders are still in place - just!  Picked up some really useful things myself which I'll be putting to good use.

Really good turn out, Ian Harrison from Dragon brought a few guys along and Jay had a few of his own students there so it was a really good atmosphere.

Loved the session although my shoulders are still buring from the last couple of exercises!

International Training Holiday Portugal

Just arrived back from Quarteira, Portugal - 2009 International Training Holiday.

It was a brilliant experience with styles such as Kickboxing, Ju-Jitsu, Aikido, Freestyle, Aikido-Shiatsu, Karate Goju-Ryu, Bujinkan, Judo, Hawaii-Kenpo and Defesa-Pessoal.  The styles were taught by English and Portugese instructors ranging from 5th - 8th Dan.

The training was brilliant and to top it all I graded for my 3rd Dan while I was there which made every bruise worth while!

Liam & I went for a week which also allowed us to enjoy the sun, relax and have fun.  The weather was hot, the pool was freezing, food was good, made some new friends and overall had a great time.

Squad Training 04.10.09

Squad training at Paragon this morning with Jason Dorn and his students.

Combination of semi-contact & boxing drills and sparring techniques, picking up with some light sparring to finish off a good session.  Myself and Ric Hill went along to this one today, is really good for us to work with students from Jason's group.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, great atmosphere, Jason and his students always make us feel very welcome every time we train with them.

Kyusho New Intake 03.10.09

Saturday 3rd October saw the new intake of Kyusho students.  Ric Hill, Steve Wilson & Neil Marshall have joined the study programme at PKO with Instructor Jason Dorn.

It might seem a lot to take in during the early stages but it does make sense after a few more sessions..........honest!

Your next session is planned for Saturday 7th November at the slightly later time of 2pm.  Then from the new year you will merge in with all the other students from other levels.

Tournament - Peterborough Series 13.09.09

Well done to the team who entered the Peterborough Series on 13th September.  The team for this event was Matt Drew, Matt Bowen, Alan Williams, Rob Dunkley-Ross, Liam Spowage & Ric Hill.

Well done to everyone, there was a huge improvement from all of you today.  Very well done to Matt Drew who got 1st and Rob Dunkley-Ross who got 2nd in points.

Massive improvement from Alan this time who got drawn against the same brown belt as his last two fights but put up an excellent fight and only lost out by a couple of points, well done Alan!

Many thanks to Kelly, Trev, Roxanne, Elliott & Ethan for coming along to support the team.

Nottingham Open 30.08.09

Liam & I went along to Nottingham School of Blackbelts on Sunday 30th August to watch their Interclub tournament.

The standard was exceptional especially the points and there was an brilliant atmosphere.  There were a few familiar faces from the Boston & Peterborough series and also Ian Harrison from Dragon Freestyle had a group of students who took part and came away with a few medals and trophies.

It was a pleasure to meet Owen King the Chief Instructor of NSBB and also Avinder Panesar from Tek Kickboxing who had organised the event.

Well done to everyone who took part and we'll look forward to being invited again next year.

Sparring Class

Thank you to everyone who came along to support the first of the new sparring classes.  It was a great turn out for an opening class and it was excellent to see a good variation of age groups attend.

These classes have something for everyone from beginners drills to the squad team picking up the pace!  These are open to all members (check the restrictions to the younger members) and everyone is welcome.

The class time has been changed slightly to fit with the general requirement of students and will now be 6.30 - 7.30pm on Fridays.

Pressure Points Therapy Seminar 16.08.09

Excellent seminar by Jason Dorn on Pressure Point Therapy on Sunday 16th August at Paragon Black Belt Academy in Ilkeston.

For me it was a great way to see the opposite side of the Kyusho Pressure Points and those who attended without any prior pressure point knowledge found it just as interesting.

We all got the opportunity to put a little into practice and were able to loosen off a few aches and pains that we have collected over the years.

The seminar was 3 hours which flew past and really only touched the tip of what there is to learn.  Some of you missed out this time so Jay is planning to run the session again soon.

Sam

Tournament Update Boston Series 12.07.09

The squad this time were Rob Dunkley-Ross, Matt Bowen & Ric Hill.

Well done to all three of you, you are all getting better and better, a few more tournaments under your belt to gain the experience and you'll soon be coming home with those trophies.

Well done to Rob who took 2nd place in veterans points, Ric who just lost out to John from Paragon, a very close fight and Matt also was only just behind to a much higher graded opponent.

Jason Dorn's squad from paragon did extremely well in all their categories and came away with several trophies.

Tournament Update - Peterborough Series 28.06.09

The Squad for the Peterborough Series on 28th June were Alan Williams, Neil Marshall, Rob Dunkley-Ross, Matt Bowen and Ric Hill.

Well done to Neil and Rob on your first tournament and extra well done to Rob who came home with 3rd place in points.

Nice work from Alan, Matt and Ric on your second tournament you all put 100% effort in, remember this is only the second time you have entered a tournament and you are all much lower grades compared to your competition, you are well on the right track and as you build your experience you will be coming home with plenty of trophies.

Thanks again to Liam & Kelly for coming along to support the boys.

Congratualtions to Jason's team from Paragon, a few more trophies to your collection!

Clinch Fighting & Balance Workshop Sunday 17.05.09

Clinch is the part of the fight that links stand up fighting and ground fighting, the workshop provided an insight to a better understanding of the clinch which is necessary to keep you on your feet.

Many thanks to Jason Dorn (PKO Principal) for sharing some of his extensive knowledge with us, the 3 hours flew past and am sure he could have continued teaching all day and still would only have brushed the surface of this subject.

Always a pleasure to train with Jason and his students and we are looking forward to the next workshop.

Gradings 29.04.09 & 06.05.09

Well done to everyone for your outstanding efforts.  Results and awards will be given at the next class you attend.

The member area password has changed, you will be given this after you have been given your results.

Due to the high amount of students now grading, the Wednesday evenings are no longer suitable especially for the younger members.  From the next grading in July the gradings will be on Sundays and the venue will be Jesse Boots Wildcats Arena, Bakersfield.

Tournament Update - Boston 19.04.09

Well done to Steve Wilson, Matt Bowen, Matt Drew, Aaron Leighton, Alan Williams & Ric Hill who took part in the Boston Championship Series on Sunday 19th April 2009.

This was their first competition and were up against some high grade and highly experienced students from around the country.  Everyone did extremely well and there were some tense moments with rounds going to extra time.

A huge congratulations to Steve Wilson who won 3rd place in points.

Thanks to Kelly Hill, Rob Dunkley-Ross and Liam Spowage for coming along to support the team..

Jason Dorn and his team from Paragon also did very well in both points and continuous.  Many thanks to Jason for his help and expertise with the squad training and help coaching on the day.

Please see the Tournaments & Competitions page for more details and photographs.
